Former Limerick inter-county hurler Dave Clarke is to join the county’s backroom staff in the wake of Donal O’ Grady’s shock resignation last month.

Clarke who predominantly played half-back for the Treaty County is set to join TJ Ryan’s management group just three weeks prior to the Munster SHC clash with Tipperary in Semple Stadium on June 1.

Clarke’s name will be put forward at next week’s County Board meeting and will need to be ratified by club delegates, the Limerick Leader reports.

It is understood the former Kilmallock hurler will join the senior set-up as a selector but may also assist with coaching the group.

The expected appointment comes after some confusion over whether additional coaches would be added to Ryan’s team with the manager having dismissed the idea after it was stated as a ‘priority’ in a Limerick GAA statement.

Clarke, who won two Munster titles in his time as a player, has previously been involved with county teams having been coached the Under-21s in 2003.

Former Cork All-Ireland winning coach O’ Grady walked away from the Limerick set-up last month after a row with the county board over a comment that suggested both he and joint-manager Ryan had apologised for the county’s poor league performance.
