A 60-year-old Galway man has been jailed for life for murdering his long-term partner in a Dublin apartment over two years ago.

Martin Kinneavy, formerly of Hampton Court in Inchicore, stabbed Mary Hannon 14 times in the flat they shared in April of 2005.

The Central Criminal Court heard that the couple had been in a twelve-year relationship, and ran a holistic massage business together.

Superintendent Gabriel O’Gara told the court that the Sunday World newspaper became interested in their business, and ran a story saying there was more than holistic message on offer.

CAB then investigated the business, and the couple were ordered to pay a tax bill of €344,000.

Martin Kinneavy told Gardaí that, on the evening in question, he had returned the to their apartment, and that after a few drinks, Mary Hannon began to humiliate him, leading to a disagreement over the tax bill and how it would be paid.

He went to the kitchen area, got a large knife, and stabbed her 14 times, finally embedding the knife in her abdomen. He then rang 999, and told Gardaí what he had done.

Mr. Justice Peter Charlton handed down the mandatory life sentence this afternoon after Martin Kinneavy pleaded guilty to the murder.
