An elderly woman has been killed in a road incident in west Cork.

Elderly woman dies following road collision

An elderly woman has been killed in a road incident in west Cork.

The collision occurred, shortly before midday in Bantry.

It is reported the woman was crossing the road at Wolfe Tone Square when she was hit by a truck.

The woman, who was in her 70s, died from her injuries. Her body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.

It is understood the woman was from west Cork.

Gardaí in Bantry are investigating and are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

The N71 Skibbereen/Killarney Road will remain closed to allow a forensic examination to take place.

Diversions are in place.
