Fine Gael’s stubborn insistence that it will not consider going into coalition with any other party or group of parties is in danger of creating political instability that could have far-reaching consequences for the economy and society as a whole.
As the Dáil resumes today for the second time since the election, we seem to be no nearer to the formation of a Government.
While Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael held further exploratory talks on policy matters yesterday, Leo Varadkar continues to declare that he will not lead his party into government. FG continues to characterise this process as a means of facilitating other parties to form a government — rather than exploring the compatibility of their policies for a Programme for Government. Similarly, it has resumed discussions with the Green Party but maintains that these are talks about policy, not about government formation.
The caretaker Taoiseach and his caretaker administration must put the needs of the people over the needs of the party, even if that means being prepared to go into government.
