A major row between Government and Opposition politicians is ongoing in the Seanad.

A rainbow of Fine Gael, Labour and independent Senators are opposing the legislation which will ban opinion polls for a week prior to an election.

The Government is insisting the Electoral Bill will be passed despite calls to recommit it for further debate.

Independent Senator Joe O’Toole says the moving of the legislation to ban opinion poll shows that “we can’t trust people with information, which is the basis of facism, censorship and the basis of all dictatorships since the beginning of history”.
