A Pakistani Muslim was jailed for life today for burning a copy of the Koran, an act considered insulting to Islam’s holy book under the country’s blasphemy laws.

A judge in Lahore, ruled that the “prosecution has proved its case” against Mehdi Hasan, said defence lawyer Pervez Chaudhry.

Pakistan law says offending Islam, its prophet or its holy book is punishable by a maximum penalty of death.

Hasan was arrested in December 2001 following a complaint by a member of his local council.

Chaudhry said the case stemmed from a property dispute between Hasan and some of his relatives, who were allegedly being backed by the councillor.
