Adams says IRA plays no part in sectarianism

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has said that attacks on Protestant homes and property go against the beliefs of the republican movement.

Speaking in response to another night of sectarian rioting in Belfast, Mr Adams appealed to any nationalists involved in the violence to stop.

He denied DUP claims that the IRA orchestrated last night's violence in Whitewell by shipping in busloads of rioters for the sole purpose of attacking Protestant homes.

"I want to appeal to all of those people who have been involved and engaged in sectarian violence to stop," Mr Adams said.

"All of the reports from the areas, and our sense of this, is that there is an orchestrated campaign taking place involving the main loyalist organisations. I want to state emphatically that there is no republican orchestration."

"A small minority of people from those areas have been sucked in. I want to repudiate the incident, any attack on Protestant homes or property. Sectarian attacks are alien to Irish republicanism."
