Gay Kelleway has snapped up Frankie Dettori for Vortex in the totesport International Stakes at Ascot tomorrow.
The Italian has ridden Vortex on his last two outings but confirmation that he would be available for the £150,000 (€226,000) Heritage Handicap over seven furlongs only came when Godolphin decided not to run Desert Destiny.
Kelleway is pleased that Vortex has a low draw (six) in which the weights have gone up 5lb following the defections of Tillerman and With Reason bringing Vortex’s weight up to 8st 9lb.
The Newmarket trainer said: “Things have worked out wonderfully well for us. It’s a good draw and I’m happy to see so many of the fancied runners around our horse.
“He was drawn low when he ran so well in the Victoria Cup and Frankie admitted that the first time he rode him in the Hunt Cup things didn’t work out because he’s a hard horse to know but when they went to Newbury last time they got on like a dream and were only beaten a short head.
“Vortex has come back and pleased me and on a level playing field he must have as good a chance as anything.”
Vortex is now down to as low as 5-1 clear favourite with Ladbrokes following Dettori’s booking.
