Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has admitted his surprise that Wednesday’s Premiership clash with Charlton was not postponed until less than half an hour before kick-off.
The Scot was disappointed that the game had not gone ahead after taking an hour to travel the three miles to St James’ Park, but had few qualms about the decision, other than the timing of it.
“That’s my personal opinion, yes,” he said when asked if it should have been called off earlier.
“It was obvious long before it was called off that there was danger to people travelling.
“The amount of snow that came – and it came very quickly – and the freezing temperatures all combined to make it a very dangerous evening for travelling, and I think that should have been recognised a bit earlier.
“Anyone who ventured out that night surely has to understand it was dangerous for people travelling. Personally, it took me an hour to get to the game and I’m only three miles from the stadium.
“I witnessed people falling over, cars sliding into other cars, cars not able to get up hills, so it amazes me that people are that surprised that the game was called off.
“Anyone who ventured out that night surely must have seen it was dangerous for travellers.”
