Gardai say they have now identified the man who shot himself inside a Dublin garda station last evening, but will not be releasing his name.

The man pulled out a handgun in the public office of Fitzgibbon St garda station and shot himself in the head.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

His condition is described as critical.

Detectives have questioned three gardai and one member of the public who witnessed the incident.
