Michael Schumacher proved quickest in warm-up for the Hungarian Grand Prix after watching team-mate Rubens Barrichello beach his Ferrari on the gravel.
Five-times world champion Schumacher, who is hoping to become the first driver to win 10 races in a season, clocked the fastest lap of one minute 16.864 seconds in the dying moments of the 30-minute session at the Hungaroring.
That came shortly after pole-sitter Barrichello had locked his brakes on entry to turn 13, the Brazilian sliding backwards into the gravel from which he was unable to escape.
Barrichello was forced to settle for the second-best time of the morning behind Schumacher, who starts second on the grid, clocking one minute 17 seconds exactly.
Again the Ferraris were clear of their rivals, with the McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen eight 10ths of a second adrift, followed by the Jordans of Giancarlo Fisichella and Takuma Sato both over a second slower.
David Coulthard was the best of the five Britons in eighth, recording a time of 1:18.234, with Jenson Button and Eddie Irvine 12th and 14th respectively in their Renault and Jaguar cars.
Allan McNish was down in 18th in his Toyota, while Anthony Davidson was again at the back of the field as he prepares for his debut grand prix a week after being told he would be driving for Minardi.
