A four-year-old German girl tumbled to her death down a deep well today at a country home in central Italy where her family was staying on holiday, authorities said.

The child was playing outside with a brother when she climbed on top of the stone well and sat on a metal net covering the opening.

The cover gave way, and she fell 18 meters (60 feet) to the bottom, Italian state TV reported.

Police were investigating the accident near Fossacesia, in the Abruzzo region.

The child’s body was pulled from the well by firefighters and taken to nearby Lanciano hospital for an autopsy, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
