Survey: One in five students bullied contemplate suicide
One in five secondary school pupils who are bullied contemplate suicide, according to a new survey.
The study of 12 to 16-year-olds in the North Eastern Health board area also shows most victims are afraid to tell parents or teachers about it.
Over 1000 students in Counties Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan took part in the survey.
Health board psychiatrist, Dr Marie Lawlor, says bullies adopt many different tactics. "The main forms of bullying are name calling, but there are other forms including being hit and threatened but what adolescents tend to use is psychological bullying, which involves isolating people and leaving them out and this can upset them quite substantially."
