Queen tops list of 'must have' albums
Queen’s chart-topping release A Night At The Opera was today named the ultimate album which music fans should own.
The 1975 LP – which featured what is often ranked the greatest single of all time, Bohemian Rhapsody – topped a poll for British radio station Virgin Radio.
The Beatles highest entry is only number nine with Revolver – a place below Meat Loaf’s rock epic Bat Out Of Hell.
DJ Daryl Denham was featuring the countdown on his drivetime show this evening after profiling his shortlist of “50 albums you really should own” over the past few weeks.
Listeners were then asked to rank them in order.
A Night At The Opera was Queen’s first number one album and the release which gave the quartet their biggest break.
The carefully-crafted Beach Boys album Pet Sounds was runner-up in the list, compiled from thousands of votes.
Oasis’s biggest-seller (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? was third in the list.
The most recent release in the list was last year’s By The Way by US rock act Red Hot Chili Peppers which came in at number six.
Sting’s album Ten Summoner’s Tales proved most unpopular with listeners, finishing in 50th position and attracting just two votes.
“I suppose I was bound to get one wrong, I was picking 50,” said Denham.
