The Environmental Protection Agency have confirmed this evening that they have been notified that cryptosporidium been found in a County Kilkenny town's water supply.

Irish Water confirmed this afternoon, that levels of the parasite, which causes diarrhea and stomach aches had been detected in Graiguenamanagh’s water supply last week.

The water-treatment plant was shut down on Wednesday of last week with a temporary one then installed.

In a statement, the EPA said it carried out a complete audit of the plant and a report is now pending.

They also say they are liaising with Irish Water to disinfect the water supply.

Local Councillor Peter Cleere said that 'the delay in informing local residents of this problem is unacceptable''.
