Robson confirms Ellington interest

West Brom boss Bryan Robson is keen to pursue his interest in Wigan striker Nathan Ellington – but insists Robbie Earnshaw is not leaving as part of the bargain.

West Brom boss Bryan Robson is keen to pursue his interest in Wigan striker Nathan Ellington – but insists Robbie Earnshaw is not leaving as part of the bargain.

Robson is keen to link up Ellington and Earnshaw in the new Premiership campaign and is standing by recent comments that he wants the Welshman to stay at The Hawthorns.

Albion are yet to begin official talks over Ellington, who has one year left on his Latics contract and is resisting pleas for him to sign a new deal.

But they are set to step up their interest in the player as they continue their search for a new striker which has so far proved fruitless this summer.

Robson sees no point in bringing in Ellington only to off-load another striker, and said: “Earnie scored 11 goals for us last season – if you go out and try to buy somebody who can score 11 in the Premiership it is really difficult.

“He is an important part of the squad and he knows that.”

Ellington’s agent Tony Finnegan also confirmed the Baggies’ interest in the player, telling the West Midlands Express and Star: “I can’t deny Albion are interested in him.

“The chief scout at the club (Bobby Hope) has liked him ever since he was at Bristol Rovers four years ago, but at the time there was different management at the club.”
