Brett Doyle returned to the saddle with a winner when partnering Lonely Ahead to victory for Clive Brittain at Doncaster last night.
The jockey is back with the veteran Newmarket handler for the remainder of the season as he resumes his riding career after taking a break following a stint in Hong Kong.
Doyle made his successful comeback aboard Brittain’s juvenile filly in the Heartbeat Appeal EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, having partnered her dam Sayyedati to success in the 1995 Sussex Stakes.
“I’m getting stuck in. There is a long way to go for the rest of this season, but as long as I keep ticking over and getting winners then I will be delighted,” the jockey told Racing UK.
“This filly is very well bred. I rode her mother and have been riding her out for about a month, so it wasn’t a surprise that she won.
“Her mother was a very good mare and between four and five years she was excellent. She was a top-class miler, and you never know, we may have another one.”
Doyle decided to take a break from British racing after missing a drugs test at Newmarket last summer, following which he was hit with a three-month ban from the Jockey Club.
“I missed a urine sample at Newmarket about a year ago and when I returned to the racecourse the drug tester had already left,” said Doyle.
“The way it went I had to take the punishment and get on with it. It is difficult to swallow, but there is no point worrying about it – what’s done is done.
“You have got to carry on the best you can and get on the road back. I have been travelling, then have just ridden out, that’s all.
“Trying to control the weight and fitness is very hard after a long time off, though.”
