INOU: Job scheme cutbacks are 'unjustified'

The National Organisation for the Unemployed says Government cutbacks in programmes like the Community Employment Scheme are unjustified.

The National Organisation for the Unemployed says Government cutbacks in programmes like the Community Employment Scheme are unjustified.

The organisation said the Government failed to hold proper consultations before implementing the cutbacks shortly after its re-election last year.

The Government decided to remove thousands of people from the Community Employment Scheme in an effort to save money last year.

The INOU said the lack of consultation on the decision breached the spirit of social partnership.

It also said the cutbacks showed the Government was determined to target the less well-off in society.

The organisation is to debate the matter at its annual delegate conference in Dublin today.
