Fianna Fáil have swiftly to replace Pat Carey as director of election.

Cork North Central TD Billy Kelleher has been appointed Fianna Fáil's Director of Elections for the next general election.

Party leader Michael Martin has appointed the party's Health Spokesperson as Director of Elections for the General Election in succession to Pat Carey who stepped down yesterday.

Making the appointment Mr Martin said "Billy was first elected to the Dáil in 1997 and has a wide range of experience, having served as Minister of State for Trade and Commerce and Minister of State for Labour Affairs," said Mr Martin.

"He replaces Pat Carey. I would like to thank Pat and acknowledge his work on the campaign to date," added Mr Martin.

Mr Kelleher will take up the role with immediate effect.
