EU scientists recommend sunbed ban for children

European Union experts in Belgium today warned that sunbeds and tanning lamps were likely to increase the risk of skin cancer and recommended a ban on their use by children and other people at high risk.

European Union experts in Belgium today warned that sunbeds and tanning lamps were likely to increase the risk of skin cancer and recommended a ban on their use by children and other people at high risk.

“We need to act rapidly in order to raise public awareness of the risks associated with sunbeds,” said EU Public Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.

He responded to a report from a committee of European scientists that advises the EU on health risks from consumer products.

The report said people under 18 and those with pale skin, freckles or a family history of skin cancer should not use sunbeds.
