More than nine out 10 Iraqis have voted Osama bin Laden the political personality of 2001 in a poll.

A total of 93% of people taking part in a survey for Iraqi radio and television picked the al-Qaida leader.

The radio and TV research department didn't say how many people took part or provide other details of the poll.

The pollsters said: "The Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden is the political personality of 2001 for his hostility towards American hegemony and aggression against Afghanistan."

The official daily newspaper al-Jumhuriya and the weekly al-Zawra have already elected bin Laden as man of the year.

The daily newspaper also declared George W Bush "the most stupid personality" of the year.
