Ronald de Boer admits Rangers must defeat Anzhi Makhachkala to show they are good enough to play in Europe.
The one-off UEFA Cup first round tie will take place in Warsaw on Thursday night against the Russian side, who are making their European debut.
The Ibrox side go into the tie following a stunning 6-1 demolition of Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday where de Boer added his own name to the scoresheet.
But he insists that - although they will show Anzhi respect - they must impress against the Russian side to demonstrate that they deserve to play in European competitions.
He said: ‘‘I think everyone knows how important this week is and it was good to get off to a good start on Saturday.
‘‘On Thursday we have another massive game but, with all due respect to the Russians, we must qualify because if you can’t beat a team like them then you don’t deserve to be in European competitions.
‘‘In saying that I don’t expect it to be an easy tie and I imagine their players will be very physical and will try very hard to get a victory.’’
