Government is urged to declare the housing crisis a 'National Emergency'

People Before Profit has called on the Government to declare a National Emergency in relation to the housing crisis.

There are 130 thousand households on the waiting list for local authority houses.

It's reported today, the Government is considering building housing on NAMA controlled land.

However, People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett, is calling for the Government to take action on the housing shortage now:

“We don’t need rhetoric or pre-election stunts, we need a dramatic action to have a massive council housing programme, to put the resources into it, to have rent controls to deal with the issue of the rent caps, to have more resources going into homeless and emergency services and of course we need to take vacant land in the hands of NAMA or in the hands of local authorities and earmark that for social housing and emergency accommodation.”
