French police say explosives, machine guns and rocket launchers found today are one of the biggest arms caches belonging to Basque separatists uncovered in 20 years.

The weapons, thought by police to belong to the Basque separatist group Eta, were discovered in a disused factory in a cornfield 19 miles south of Dax, on the fringes of French Basque country.

Police also arrested a couple and their two children, and are searching for six or seven other people.

Eta has claimed responsibility for the killing of more than 800 people in its three decade campaign for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France.
