A 29-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital today following a sectarian attack in Derry at the weekend.

The man and two others were set upon by a gang of up to eight people who were attending a bonfire in the mainly Protestant Waterside area in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack, while one of his companions had his jaw fractured and the other was badly bruised.

Minor rioting broke out as the police investigated the incident and traffic had to be diverted away from the scene.

The PSNI says it believes the victims were singled out because they are Catholic.
