RGDATA has welcomed today's decision by the Minister for Environment Martin Cullen to exclude the retail grocery sector from the current review of retail planning guidelines.

The guidelines review will now be concentrated on the provisions relating to retail warehouses.

There had been speculation that the review would be all encompassing and include a review of the floor space caps affecting the retail grocery trade.

In his announcement, the Minister stated that it is not proposed to review the caps, which apply to convenience goods retail floor space at this time.

Commenting on the Minister's announcement, Ailish Forde, the Director General of RGDATA said: "This is a welcome development and reflects the positive impact that the retail planning guidelines have had for consumers and retailers of the retail grocery trade."
