A small Russian-built airliner crashed as it was about to land in the Uzbekistan capital of Tashkent tonight, killing all 37 people on board.

Interior Ministry officials said the plane was a 52 seater Antonov-24. However Russian news agency, Interfax, reported that the plane was a Yakovlev-40.

The Interior Ministry said the plane crashed while coming in for a landing among heavy clouds.

Islam Karimov, president of the former Soviet Central Asian republic, went to the accident site.

Roads around Tashkent’s airport were blocked and it was not immediately clear whether the crash had taken place at the airport itself or in its vicinity, local residents said.
