The opposition is coming down hard on the government for not addressing spiralling legal fees at the Mahon tribunal.

The opposition is coming down hard on the government for not addressing spiralling legal fees at the Mahon tribunal.

Earlier today, both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste agreed that the tribunal costs, which are likely to reach €1bn, are excessive.

Michael McDowell says he spoke for the majority of taxpayers when he said legal fees at the tribunal must be contained.

But he denies that he was calling for the inquiry to be wound down.
