Andy Baddeley produced a late surge to snatch a thrilling victory in the BUPA Great Edinburgh International Cross Country 4.4km race this afternoon.
Last summer’s world 1500m finalist looked set for a shock defeat when Andy Vernon made a tactical break with 800m to go.
But despite falling 10m behind when former European junior cross country silver medallist Vernon made his move, Baddeley kept his composure.
The Harrow athlete slipped into top gear, powered ahead of his Aldershot rival and clinched success with a searing burst in the final straight.
“He stole a bit of a march on me, but I was completely confident I was going to get him,” said Baddeley, winner by a second in 12minutes 52secs – with Tom Lancashire third in 12:56.
