Police were today investigating the cause of a fire on a bus in central London.

Roads were cordoned off around the smoking bus near King’s Cross station.

A police source said: “There have been no bangs. We’re investigating what it is.”

Gray’s Inn Road and part of Pentonville Road were cordoned off.

Florrie Rosete, owner of Sam Widges sandwich shop in Gray's Inn Road, said the bus in question was just yards from her establishment.

She went on: “There are loads of police around as well as firefighters. I can see the bus. I don’t think there was a bang, or an explosion, or anything like that.

“I understand a package was left inside the bus and the roads around have been sealed off. The driver contacted the police and they quickly turned up.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We had reports of smoke coming from a double decker bus on Gray’s Inn Road.

“We are just trying to establish exactly what the circumstances are.

“We have closed the roads in the immediate vicinity.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “There was a small fire on a bus and it seems there was a bag found as well. Nobody was injured.”

The Ambulance Service have been called.

A Transport for London spokesman said: “The incident involved a 205 bus close to King’s Cross.

“Buses in the area have been delayed.”
