Bookmakers predict National and Cup fever

Bookmakers are predicting a record-breaking £200m (€300m) will be bet on Saturday’s Martell Cognac Grand National at Aintree.

Bookmakers are predicting a record-breaking £200m (€300m) will be bet on Saturday’s Martell Cognac Grand National at Aintree.

“The Grand National is a national institution and we are confident that the once-a-year punters will still be out in their millions to place their annual flutter,” said Coral’s spokesman Simon Clare.

The combination of the Grand National and the FA Cup semi-final clash between Arsenal and Manchester United is expected to smash all previous betting records, and as a result Britain’s bookmakers could face huge liabilities if either Gunner Welburn or Red Striker win the Aintree marathon.

“Arsenal fans will be placing doubles on their team to win and Gunner Welburn to win the National, while United fans will be placing similar bets on Red Striker,” explained Clare.

The combined odds of Arsenal beating Manchester United and Gunner Welburn winning the National are over 60-1 with Coral while a Manchester United victory combined with a Red Striker success at Aintree would pay over 173-1.
