Both sides in the pay dispute at eircom are due to attend talks at the Labour Relations Commission today aimed at averting the first serious industrial action at the company in 30 years.

Both sides in the pay dispute at eircom are due to attend talks at the Labour Relations Commission today aimed at averting the first serious industrial action at the company in 30 years.

Four unions are threatening strike action over the telecom firm's refusal to grant an outstanding 2% pay increase due to under the social partnership process.

Eircom management is trying to get the unions to agree to new work practices before implementing the increase.

The unions say this is unacceptable as the pay rise is designed to meet the rising cost of living and not as a reward for improvements in productivity.
