Irish hospitals have reported a rise in the number of people arriving at casualty wards with self-inflicted injuries.

The increase is putting an added burden on psychiatric and casualty services.

Doctors said the problem of self-mutilation is most common among women, and is becoming frequent among alcoholics and drug addicts.
