Paddy Power punters collect bumper British Open payout

Padraig Harrington’s famous British Open victory has left bookie Paddy Power on the wrong side of a €5 million payout.

Padraig Harrington’s famous British Open victory has left bookie Paddy Power on the wrong side of a €5 million payout.

Ireland’s favourite golfer was backed at odds as big as 33/1 and 25/1 before the tournament began.

The biggest bet reported by Paddy Power was one of €5,000 at 25/1 returning a massive €130,000 to the lucky paddypower.com punter.

Garcia had been as short as 4/7 favourite standing on the first tee of his final round, with Harrington as big as 20/1.

On the first playoff hole there was just a toss of a coin between the players with Harrington at 4/5 and Garcia at 10/11.

Paddy Power said: “it’s about time he won a major! It was a pretty expensive afternoon, but it was impossible not to cheer him right through the playoff.

It’s a massive day for punters and well deserved after Zach Johnson winning the Masters at 175/1 and Angel Cabrera winning the US Open at 125/1. It’s cost us a payout of €5 million, but to see Harrington lift that Claret Jug…it was worth it!”
