Tunisian authorities have temporarily banned vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the capital's central boulevard after a new outbreak of clashes between police and stone-throwing protesters.

Police and troops backed by tanks deployed in Tunis as hundreds of youths rallied today to protest against the North African country's interim government - fearing it has hijacked Tunisia's revolution.

The ban on traffic in Bourguiba Avenue until midnight tomorrow is the first of its kind since President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled Tunisia on January 14 in a popular uprising which has sent shockwaves through the Arab world.

Police fired tear gas and warning shots yesterday as violence erupted alongside a sit-in which drew tens of thousands of protesters near the seat of the interim government.
