FA chief wants swift end to Eriksson inquiry

Football Association executive director David Davies has welcomed the decision to hold an inquiry into last week’s incorrect statement about England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Football Association executive director David Davies has welcomed the decision to hold an inquiry into last week’s incorrect statement about England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The FA are investigating how they came to issue a press release denying that Eriksson had an affair with a female member of staff when subsequent revelations have shown it to be true.

Eriksson, in line with his policy of never commenting on his private life, insists he has neither confirmed nor denied having an affair with secretary Faria Alam at any point.

The FA board will now meet to look at the evidence and discuss Eriksson’s future at a hastily-convened meeting next Thursday.

Davies said he regrets that the matter has come about but is pleased it is being dealt with.

He told Sky Sports News: “I’m delighted the chairman Geoff Thompson has initiated the investigation that is now going ahead. I will contribute over the next few days. I am upset by some of the tone and content of things I have heard and read while I have been away.

“The quicker we get the matter resolved the better and then everyone gets back to doing what they’re there for and that is giving the players the best chance of being successful.”

Davies would not comment on Eriksson’s future stating that whilst the investigation is ongoing the Swede will continue to enjoy the full backing of the FA.

He added: “Sven is England coach. He has a long-term record of success in various countries in Europe which everyone quite rightly respects him for that and will continue to do so.

“Everyone knows the support the FA have given Sven and I regret very much we are dealing with this incident at the moment.”
