Williams technical director Sam Michael cannot wait to get Jenson Button under his wing next season.
Michael is excited by the prospect of having the Englishman and Mark Webber - two of Formula One’s brightest prospects – together in the same team in 2005, providing the legal wrangles over Button’s future can be sorted out.
Williams have endured a difficult season this year, not helped by the knowledge both Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher were preparing to jump ship.
Now Michael hopes he has found a long-term recipe for success in Button and Webber.
He told Atlas F1: “I think Mark and Jenson will be a fantastic combination, and that’s why we’re excited about having them next year – they’re both big motivators.
“They know how Formula One works and what they have to do to push and win. It’s something that we’re looking forward to starting as soon as possible - they’re very much Williams-type drivers.
”Jenson and Mark have both already supported each other and said ’this guy is the best team-mate I could have’.
“I don’t expect them to be mates and go to the cinema together or anything like that, but I’m sure they will be fiercely competitive.”
Webber leaves Jaguar for Williams at the end of the season while Button hopes to do the same from BAR.
But his current team insist they have a contract with the 24-year-old and are refusing to let him leave quietly. The issue is expected to be resolved in court over the winter.
