Groups representing older people have expressed concern about the Health Service Executive's plans to remove public patients from the Leas Cross nursing home in Swords, Co Dublin.

A television documentary highlighted widespread neglect and mistreatment of patients at the home.

The HSE subsequently took over the running of the facility and announced it was removing public patients and was advising the relatives of private patients to also do so.

Relatives of patients and nursing staff have been protesting outside the home today to highlight their concerns about the plan.

The support group Action on Elder Abuse said the proposed move would be traumatic for the residents unless it was well-planned and gave them ample time to adjust.
