Communications Minister Noel Dempsey has approved a €3 increase in the RTÉ licence fee from April 1 next, bringing the cost of a TV licence to €155.

Mr Dempsey said he had decided to approve the 2% increase after an external review found that RTÉ had "performed strongly in the programming, financial management and commercial areas".

He said he was particularly pleased with the review's findings in relation to the strengthening of RTÉ programming output and the meeting of key financial targets.

"I am satisfied that the annual review process helps provide the public, who fund RTÉ, with the reassurance they need that their money is being used effectively in the public interest by RTÉ," the minister said.
