Microsoft is to invest more on research and development in the coming years.
During a conference yesterday founder Bill Gates said that the company would spend $6.9bn (€6bn) on R&D and would add up to 5,000 positions, mostly in the US.
It is, in particular, anxious to spread its software to wireless phone, video-games consoles and other devices. It also wants to improve the security of its software.
The company said that it had no plans to issue a special dividend to shareholders or pay any extra money out to shareholders. The company now has $49bn (€42.6bn) in cash and investments.
The CFO asked people to be patient and said that the company still had to work through its legal issues.
These include a European Union investigation, an antitrust suit from Sun and class action suits.
