Gardaí are to set up checkpoints across the country in a bid to catch more drink-drivers.

There have been over 24,000 drink-driving arrests since August 2006, and gardaí will be out conducting over 30,000 random breath tests between now and the New Year.

The annual road safety campaign has already begun and drivers are being warned about the morning-after effect.

They're being reminded that it takes one hour for each unit of alcohol to pass through the system, so many people who were out at night may still be over the limit the following morning.
