Turkish forces have seized four suspected Kurdish rebels who were preparing bombs, the Anatolia news agency today reported.

The four suspected rebels were captured with 4 kilograms of explosives and other bomb-making materials in Batman, south-eastern Turkey, Anatolia said.

A news release from the local governor’s office said the rebels were planning an attack in the city centre, and were captured with documents linking them to the rebel Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, Anatolia said.

Kurdish rebels have recently increased their attacks in the south-east, often using remote-controlled bombs to attack passing military convoys.

More than 37,000 people have died as a result of the fighting between the Turkish military and the rebels since 1984.
