A smoking volcano on Indonesia’s main island of Java forced an airport to close today.

Mount Bromo, one of Java’s most popular tourist attractions, came back to life last week after a year-long lull, unleashing a powerful blast of volcanic debris but causing no injuries or serious damage.

State volcanologist Surono warned, however, that a bigger eruption may be on the way.

Officials shut down the airport in Malang, a town 15 miles from the volcano, for five days.

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of 235 million, has more active volcanoes than any other country in the world.

Villagers often climb the 7,641ft mountain to leave offerings at the peak.
