The Minister for Education has told the Dail that there are contingency plans in place to keep schools open if ASTI members withdraw from supervision.

The teachers' union is currently balloting members on whether to withdraw from this duty following their rejection of a new pay scheme.

The union warned today that up to 600 schools would be closed indefinitely if the ASTI voted for strike action.

Minister Michael Woods moved to assure the Dail that schools would not close as they did when ASTI members last refused to supervise classes.
