A nine-year-old girl was in hospital today after being injured in a hit-and-run accident involving a stolen car.

The little girl was sitting in a parked car in Derry last night when it was struck by a stolen BMW which raced on.

Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police said the red BMW was stolen from outside a shop in Aileach Road in the Ballymagroarty area of the city.

A few minutes later it struck the car in which the girl was sitting.

The driver sped on and abandoned the vehicle a short distance away further down the Aileach Road.

Police appealed for anyone who saw the car being taken, the accident or the vehicle being abandoned to contact them.
