The Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed has expressed concern at new statistics showing an 18% rise in live register figures over the last 12 months.

INOU general secretary Eric Conroy said he fears the situation could get worse.

“We really must try and change this situation,” he said.

“We are concerned that we may be getting back to a rise that could lead us back to the bad old days of the 1980s and the 1990s.”
