Gardaí investigating a foiled assassination attempt in Cork at the weekend have sent guns seized from the suspects to Dublin for examination by ballistic experts.

Officers are continuing to question two men in their 30s over a suspected dissident operation in the city.

They were arrested on Saturday in Togher, when a garda noticed a man acting suspiciously in a van.

After searching the van, he found another man hiding in the back, along with two loaded firearms and five-litre containers of petrol gardaí believe the men were intending to use to torch the van after the hit.
