The Labour Party has called on Health Minister Micheal Martin to intervene in the dispute between public health doctors and health service employers.

270 doctors attached to Ireland's health boards went on strike this morning over pay and conditions and in protest at their employers' failure to implement a nine-year-old agreement.

Labour spokesperson Liz McManus said: "I'm very concerned at the fact that there is no movement at all towards resolving this strike and I'm calling on the Minister for Health to intervene to get the negotiations started."
