Abuse was shouted from the public gallery and two people were escorted from a courtroom by police today as a 22-year-old man faced a charge of raping a 16-year-old girl.

Joseph Patrick McIntyre from Great James Street, Derry, was later granted bail but was warned not to drink, interfere with witnesses and to stay away from certain parts of the city.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that when charged by police, he replied: “That is lies there.”

His appearance in front of a magistrate followed the rape at a flat in the Bogside district on New Year’s Day.

Police were alerted after the traumatised girl was later picked up by a taxi.

People in the public gallery who shouted abuse at Mr McIntyre were warned by the magistrate they could go to jail for contempt.
