Storm kills three in Austria

Winds with speeds of up to 75 mph swept through Austria late last night and earlier today, killing at least three people and blocking traffic as trees and branches fell onto roads.

In Salzburg, which was among the areas hardest hit by the storm, the area surrounding the Elizabeth Church was cordoned off after a roof tile torn off the church in a storm last November killed a 26-year-old man.

Firefighters were working to clear roads from branches and trees that had been felled by the storm. The continuing strong winds hampered their work.

The storm brought heavy snowfall to mountainous areas, which in combination with the strong winds brought a high avalanche risk, officials warned.

Rain combined with freezing temperatures left roads covered in sheet ice in the southern province of Styria, causing several accidents including a pile-up that killed three Polish people.
